ABSTRACT

The present study investigated the potential use of Triticum monococcum L. (einkorn wheat) husks for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The studied materials were obtained by pyrolysis and incineration of Triticum monococcum L. husks. The porous structure of both biomaterials was investigated by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of contact time and initial MB concentration on MB adsorption. Experimental data was fitted to the linear Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The Freundlich isotherm most adequately described the adsorption process. Pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models were used to analyze kinetic data. The maximum MB adsorption capacities were calculated. The results indicated that einkorn wheat husks could be an interesting raw material for production of biosorbents used for dye removal.
